Rescue Success Stories

Where are our rescues today?

We are proud to say we have rehomed horses to 36 different states across the nation! Take a look at a few of our favorite SMHR stories below.

Aries

Aries was one of a group called the Lucky 13, a herd of mustangs rescued in the winter of early 2024. She came in as a surrender with law enforcement assistance. Although completely emaciated and weak, she was a sweetheart from the start. She was one of the only mustangs who wanted human attention when she arrived, always eager to take food out of your hand or be pet. She never stopped fighting or wanting love, even after humans had failed her. She was broke to ride upon arrival, but required a lot of weight gain and nourishment before her body would be strong enough to handle a rider. She excelled quickly in her training, as she surprised us with her groundwork knowledge and riding ability, but her skills were finetuned. Today, she has a happy home with a family who loves her!

Chase

Chase, a tall and eye-catching sorrel gelding, was an off-track thoroughbred who arrived at SMHR with a knee injury. Though this type of injury can be career ending for a racehorse, it does not mean he would never be sound for riding and living a happy life again. After an extensive surgery, months of rehab, and training again under saddle to brush up his riding skills, Chase has blossomed. From the start, we knew he was special and athletic enough to go in any direction. His new owner, Savanna, now rides him on the Arkansas Darlings drill team at rodeos and play days. Chase is strong, healthy, and energetic as ever!

Walker Texas Ranger

This sweet boy came to SMHR when his previous owners surrendered him. He was skittish and malnourished from a lack of handling, but his gentle spirit always shined through. He was broke to ride upon arrival at the rescue, but needed some time to gain weight and become healthy again before his training knowledge would be assessed. He is a gentle giant at heart, and is now thriving as a trail and pleasure riding horse with his new family!

Playboy

Playboy is handsome paint gelding. He’s now brave, honest, trustworthy and quirky all in one small package. He came to the rescue without any of these qualities and has excelled at any task put in front of him. He was once an unstarted and untrusting gelding who required a lot of one-on-one time to overcome his fear of people. Playboy, one of our biggest challenges, one of our greatest lessons, and one of the best horses that has come through SMHR! He can push cattle, has impeccable ground manners, and now rides like a dream. He has not been adopted yet, but we wouldn’t be surprised if he gains a permanent residence at the rescue, as he is truly one of a kind.
